A smart cat named Leopold is hunting a mouse. A mouse is hiding in one of five holes arranged in a row. Leopold can reach into one of the holes and try to catch the mouse. If he is not successful, the scared mouse runs into a right/left neighboring hole. Is it guaranteed that Leopold will catch the mouse? If so, what should he do?

Does this mean that Leopold does not know which hole the mouse is in and if he picks a wrong hole, the mouse will run into a neighboring (right or left) hole?

which neighboring hole does the mouse pick (when it has a choice)? a random one? based on some algorithm (e.g. farthest from the cat)? something else?

er, wait...
1) Leopold reaches into any random hole C
2) mouse runs from hole A to hole B
3) Leopold reaches into hole B and catches the mouse.

this seems overly trivial... so some answers to clarify.
a) how is success determined (i.e. just picking the right hole, or in another fashion)?
b) are the holes connected internally in some fashion? (so that the mouse is not necessarily in the hole into which he ran)
c) can the mouse be caught in transit (i.e. while running from hole A to hole B), or are we only allowed to reach into the hole?
d) can we see the mouse heading from one hole into another, or tell anything about which hole it was in or is moving into?

here's my interpretation:

there are 5 holes, labeled 1-5.

One of them contains a mouse, call that hole x.

if you guess hole x, you win. if you don't, the mouse moves to hole x +/- 1 (assume it's random, but restricted by the lower bound of 1 and upper bound of 5) and now you guess again and the process is the same, but "hole x" is the new hole one away from the previous hole.
